Wedding Dance Fears Gone by Focusing on These Two Things

By Angela Fayth

The thought of your first dance can bring up a lot of nerves. Many couples worry about looking awkward or stiff, especially if one or both partners have never danced in front of an audience before.

There are so many variables, and that’s what makes it so nerve-wracking. You never get to practice in your actual wedding attire, at least not together, and chances are, the space where you’ve been practising looks nothing like the venue. The flooring, orientation, and surroundings all change on the big day and it's rare that a couple get to practice in the actual venue.

The thought of all eyes on you during your first dance can feel overwhelming. It’s easy to imagine tripping over each other’s feet or freezing up as soon as the music starts. These nerves can take away from what should be a fun, romantic moment.

The only constants? Your partner and the song you’ve chosen.

Focus on the one thing you can control—your connection with each other. By learning simple, personalised steps in a relaxed setting, you can gain the confidence you need to feel comfortable in any environment.

Here are five tips to help you overcome shyness and feel confident on the dance floor:

  1. Start Simple
Forget fancy choreography if it adds to your stress. Begin with basic moves that feel comfortable, then add personalised highlights to make it special.

  2. Practice in a Comfortable Setting
You’re already stepping into unfamiliar territory on your wedding day, so practice somewhere you feel at ease—whether that’s at home through online lessons or in a private studio.

  3. Treat Lessons Like a Fun Date
A good dance instructor should help your first dance to be an enjoyable experience, not another task to check off the wedding to-do list. If you can, couple it with dinner out or something that makes it feel less like a chore and more like a date night/day activity.

  4. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection
Your guests aren’t expecting a flawless performance—they’re there to see you enjoying your moment. The connection between you and your partner is what truly makes the dance memorable.

  5. Trust the Process and Practice Regularly
Confidence comes from repetition. The more you practice, the more natural the moves will feel, and the more confident you’ll be when it’s time to get up there and dance. Muscle memory is an incredible tool on your wedding day.

If you have all of these things down, it comes back to focusing on these two things on the day. The two things that will stay consistent from practice to the moment your first dance begins. Your partner and the music.

Teaching engaged couples for 21 years at Wedding Dance Creations taught us a thing or two about building that confidence in your first dance.  Helping you get to a place where you can feel as natural and fun, or natural and romantic as possible.

The second, we know the key to a great wedding dance is making it an enjoyable, stress-free process. Giving the lessons a date night vibe rather than another wedding appointment. That’s why our private lessons are tailored to your specific needs, and our group classes focus on simple moves that make a big impact. For those who need flexibility, we offer online lessons that range from pre-choreographed routines to fully customised dances with ongoing feedback. Our goal is to help you feel confident, connected, and excited for your special day.

CONFIDENCE THROUGH PERSONALISED EXPERIENCE

For our private lesson couples, we craft choreography uniquely tailored dances to you! In our 15-minute chat we use it to get to know your personalities and the vibe you want for your dance. We understand we’re not choreographing for ourselves, so if you come back in the second lesson and want something adapted, we're happy to do so. We figure out how you each best learn and change our teaching style to suit you because this dance is all about you, and our instructors are dedicated to creating a routine you’ll love. With our years of experience, we have so many tips and tricks up our sleeves to ensure you're first dance is better than you expected!

VIDEOS TO TAKE HOME

We know it's a lot to take in so at the end of each lesson we film what we've achieved so far so that you can remember but also, if you haven't had a chance to practice before your next lesson, it's a great visual reminder. It's also very cool to see what you started and how far you've come.

How it
Works

Step 1: Schedule Your 15-Minute Call

The first step is to schedule a quick 15-minute chat with us. This call will help us guide you in choosing the best option for your wedding dance based on your budget, time, and learning style—whether that’s pre-choreographed online lessons, personalised recorded choreography, in-person private lessons, or group classes.

For private lessons, we’ll also go over package options, discuss your vision for the choreography, and ensure you understand how the lessons will work.

You're welcome to go straight to step 2 if you know which kind of lessons you would like and are happy to get straight to booking.

Step 2: Book Your Lessons

  • For online pre-choreographed lessons, simply visit our choreography library [here], sign up for access, and start learning at your own pace.

  • For online personalised choreography, designed and recorded to your chosen song so you can learn in your own time at your own pace, click [here] to fill out the registration form and sign up.

  • For in-person private lessons, during our call, we’ll have discussed your availability and location. We’ll begin coordinating schedules with our instructors and venue partners (or arrange lessons at your home). Within 48 hours, we’ll email you with available options. Once you've confirmed in writing what works best, we’ll send a confirmation form with a payment link and your lesson details. Your booking will be confirmed once payment is received.

  • For group lessons, you can see times and locations [here] and book into whichever suits you best.

Step 3: Preparation for Your Lessons

For in-person private lessons and personalised recorded lessons, we will send you a questionnaire designed to help us choreograph the perfect wedding dance for you. This will consider details such as the style of the bride's dress, the floor size and material (dancing on uneven pavers or grass is very different from polished concrete or timber flooring), and a few other questions. Completing the questionnaire takes no more than 7 minutes.

When attending your in-person private lessons, each session lasts for one hour. You don’t need to bring shoes to your first lesson, but it’s helpful to have them for the final two lessons.
