Creating a Comfortable Wedding Dance: It’s Your Day, So Do It Your Way

Updated: Nov 8

Not every couple is eager for a big, romantic display during their first dance, and that’s completely normal! Your wedding day is about celebrating your love in a way that feels true to you. For some couples, this means a cozy, low-key dance without any dramatic dips or public displays of affection (PDA). Others love a little added romance. When training our instructors at Wedding Dance Creations, we ensure our instructors understand, that we’re here to make sure your first dance feels right—whether that includes a kiss, a fun dip, or just some lighthearted moves that make you both smile.

One of the first things we ask during your lesson is about your comfort level with things like kisses or dips. And sometimes, the responses are wonderfully candid and fun! take a look at the video below, where a groom-to-be gives the thumbs-up for a kiss mid-dip—and takes full advantage of the moment to plant a big kiss on his fiancée. These are the kinds of moments we love, where the couple feels relaxed, joyful, and fully present.

In planning a wedding, there can be a lot of outside expectations, but your first dance is one area where you get to set the tone and that generally starts with the song. Some couples prefer a simple, elegant style with minimal PDA, while others enjoy adding a few playful or romantic touches. Whichever approach you prefer, that's what you should do and don't listen to outsiders' expectations on YOUR DAY! A wedding dance doesn’t need dramatic gestures to be special—just a few moves that allow you to enjoy each other’s company and feel at ease in front of your guests.

Tips for a Natural, Comfortable Dance

If you’re the kind of couple who wants a comfortable first dance without big, romantic gestures, here are some tips to help make the experience feel natural:

  1. Pick a Song That Speaks to You Both: Choose a song that feels right for both of you, whether it’s a classic, a fun favourite, or something more low-key.

  2. Focus on Fun: Fun doesn't have to mean bodacious or loud in visuals. It can be more subtle, elegant and simple but if you look like you're having fun and not just waiting for it to be over, that will trump PDA's any day.

  3. Communicate Your Boundaries: Don’t be afraid to tell your dance instructor what makes you comfortable. Wedding Dance instructors should be here to create a dance that suits your style.
